| 1980 Paul Hackett
Presentation: Coaching the Quarterback For those looking to pass the time this off season here is an old six page coaching presentation by former coach Paul Hackett given back in the spring of 1980. USC was coming off of a very successful 11 win 0 loss and 1 tie season in 1979 and an exciting 17-16 victory over Ohio State in the Rose Bowl on New Years Day. (Note: You can see the other results in a table below). Most USC fans mainly recall Paul Hackett as the ill suited head coach that followed John Robinson at the end of Robinson's second go around with USC. In addition however Paul Hackett was also a USC QB coach from 1976 to 1980 for five years. Coach Hackett did not thrive as head coach at either Pittsburgh or USC in the college ranks compiling an overall record of 32W's 38L's and 1 Tie. As a QB coach / offensive coordinator he had more success in the NFL with stints with Bill Walsh in San Francisco, the Dallas Cowboys, etc. For a few seasons he was with the NY Jets before spending the last several years as QB coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under Jon Gruden. Currently he is either retired or with another team as I have lost track of his status. Below here is the link to the presentation he gave on "Developing the QB" at the end of the 1979 season. Regardless of your feelings about the man the article is a good read if you are interested in the thought process that coaches try to instill in quarterbacks and recognition of coverages, etc. In 1979 USC was blessed at the tailback position with Charles White who carried 332 times for 2,050 yards and QB Paul McDonald who completed 164 of 264 passes for 62% and 2,223 yards overall. It remains one of my favorite USC football teams. The print in the file is a little hard to read on-line and the response time to turn pages will vary depending upon your connection speed. I'd suggest downloading the file and either reading it on your computer or printing it out for clarity. Click here for link to presentation 1979 Season Review
