| 1982 John Robinson
Presentation: Offensive Adjustments For those looking to pass the time this off season here is an old six page coaching presentation by former coach John Robinson given back in the spring of 1982. USC was coming off of a 9 win and 3 loss season in 1981 and a defeat in a Fiesta Bowl game. USC lost twice in Pac-10 play that season with a 13-10 defeat against Arizona and a 20-10 loss at Washington. On the positive side USC had defeated Notre Dame 14-7, defeated Oklahoma 28-24, and edged UCLA 22-21. You can see the other results below in a table. Unfortunately the seasoned ended with a stinging 26-10 defeat in the Fiesta Bowl to Penn State that hurt Coach Robinson as much as any defeat in his memory at the time. In this presentation he talks about a few of the things that had changed over the years since he took over from Coach McKay. The gist of the material is mainly his thoughts on running against the type of 8 man fronts that teams were increasingly using against USC at the time. In hindsight I'm not sure Coach Robinson figured out the best method to attack these fronts. Bill Doba a linebacker coach at Washington State (and numerous other Pac-10 coaches) were all making presentations around this same time in the clinic manuals about how teams were using different ways to get an 8th defender in the box versus running teams. In the following season 1982 which was Coach Robinson's final year (JR Era 1). USC finished up with 8 Wins and 3 Losses. He then moved onto the NFL where he was coach of the LA Rams for a few years. Coach Robinson returned in 1993 to coach USC again for 5 more years. The print in the file is a little hard to read on-line and the response time to turn pages will vary depending upon your connection speed. I'd suggest downloading the file and either reading it on your computer or printing it out for clarity. Click here for link to presentation 1981 Season Review
