Cal's Play Action Pass - X Comeback Money Concept

I borrowed a tape from a person who knew someone that attended a coaching clinic session where Cal's TE coach Pete Alamar explained one of their basic Play Action Pass Concepts. He let me make a copy of it and I converted it over to DVD. Here are several 5 to 10 minute video clips I edited down for those interested in learning more about the basics of the play. The front side concept is called "Money" for short since it is a fairly successful part of their passing game. Other teams use different names. It can be run from different formations and in different ways several of which are drawn up and explained in the video. There is also some actual game footage as well as coaching commentary about what they are trying to accomplish. From what I hear Cal runs play action about 100 to 120 times per season with several different types of play action passes mixed in for variety. This is merely one concept in their play action passing game and one they were willing to share with the high school coaching community.

The play is diagrammed in the video in detail but is a little hard to read. Here is a high level overview. Please see the video below for details. Essentially at the high level it is a 15 yard comeback (Cobb) route to the backside of the formation by the split end (X) and a post corner combo route to the front side run by the tight end (Y) and the flanker (Z). The tailback runs a five yard check leak up the middle and the fullback runs a check flare to the play side. The QB drop is seven steps on the play action and the read is normally Z to Y to T or F.

The video and sound quality is not the best. I could not figure out how to adjust for that unfortunately. I broke it into three sections in case you are interested in learning more about the concept. The files may take a minute to load depending upon your internet connection speed.
