Alex Gibbs Blitz Beating Run Play

Here is a short clip of a play outlined by famed offensive line coach Alex Gibbs. It contains a fair amount of "colorful language" but this is football so be forewarned. The play is designed to be used versus teams that utilize man to man defense and or blitz frequently. It is a counter play to a zone running play to the strong (or TE) side of the formation. Coach Gibbs outlines a variation of it popular in the NFL run out of an off set I Formation (strong) with twin receivers to the opposite side. With a crack block by one receiver and a pulling action by the tackle or guard to the twin WR side it sets up a nice running lane against a team in man defense, blitzing, or anyone just over pursuing the normal strong side zone run play. You'll see what I mean when he diagrams the play. The concept should look somewhat familiar to USC fans as the Trojans run a version of it from time to time with the guard pulling. Included in the 5 minuted video clip is an example I inserted from the 2006 game versus Arkansas with now departed Emmanuel Moody at tailback for a nice gain. In the USC Trojans example the Fullback is set away from the TE and WR Brad Walker comes in motion and cracks on the Arkansas DE. The overall concept however is the same in principle.
